The ultimate gaming build right now should have two components, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 for GPU, and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D for CPU. The two are a perfect match for gaming performance. The GPU can reach incredible framerates at 1440p and even at 4K, while the CPU is more than capable of keeping up at high framerates in any modern game.

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is a great pick for gaming builds, it’s among the best, if not the best, CPU for gaming. It competes in gaming performance with the more expensive i9-14900K, and the power hungry i7-14700K, both from Intel, it also competes with more expensive AMD CPUs, like the 12-core Ryzen 9 7900X3D and 16-core Ryzen 9 7950X3D.

The RTX 4090 is the best GPU in the market right now, with very strong 4K and Ray-tracing performance, support for DLSS 3, and enough performance to push high framerates even at high resolutions. It is a great GPU for both 1440p high refresh gaming and 4K gaming.

The Components
CPU

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D, an amazing CPU, with great performance in games, low power consumption, capable of high framerates, meaning it’s perfect with the RTX 4090. It’s a bit expensive, but you get to build on platform (AM5), that you can keep for a long time, with future upgrades to come, and something that can keep up with future high-end GPUs at high resolutions like 4K and 1440p easily.

CPU Cooler

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D can easily be cooled by a good Air Cooler, the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 or Peerless Assassin 120 and many others are all you need for a cool operation while gaming. So unless you are buying something with visuals and aesthetics in mind, there is no need to overspend on cooling for the CPU.

Our Recommendation: Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 & Thermalright Peerless Assassin 140, or similar in the $35-60 price range.

  • Be aware that the ARCTIC radiator thickness is 38mm (Without Fans) and might not fit in all cases, check the case manual for more information.

Motherboard

There’s plenty of Motherboard options to choose from, any decent B650, even the more affordable mATX ones, like the excellent ASRock B650M-HDV/M.2, are more than capable of running the workstation flagship Ryzen 9 7950X in CPU intensive workloads without any issues, so for better, more expensive motherboards like the ones listed bellow, the job is even easier.

  • The Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX is one of the best ATX B650 motherboards in the $200 price range, it has lots of features, great VRM, PCIe 5.0 support for the M.2 slot and tight memory tuning out of the box, providing slightly better gaming performance overall.
  • The MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI also has great features, with USB 3.2 Gen2x2 on the rear I/O, overkill VRM. Best of all, sometimes it can be found in the sub $190 price range. It only has heatsinks on two out of three M.2 slots, and there is no PCIe 5.0 support, not really a deal breaker, it is an excellent motherboard.
  • The ASUS TUF B650-PLUS WIFI follows the Gigabyte recipe. Offers PCIe 5.0 support for the M.2 slot and dual USB Type-C on the rear I/O, plus internal header for the case, meaning it is an excellent option for those who need a lot of USB-C support on a more affordable motherboard.
  • The ASRock B650E PG Riptide WiFi is the best of both worlds, full PCIe 5.0 support, excellent pricing, good features, overall one of the best motherboards for the money if the main use case for the build is gaming.

If the plan is to be on the same platform (AM5) for a good amount of time, might be worth going with a motherboard with full PCIe 5.0 support, such as the B650E and X670E Chipset Motherboards.

Our Recommendation: ASRock B650E PG Riptide WiFi (for PCIe 5.0 support) & Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX, or similar in the $180-200 price range.

RAM

It is well know that Ryzen sweet spot is DDR5 6000 CL30 memory. That is AMD recommendation for better performance and overall compatibility/stability. 6000 CL30 memory allows an 1:1 IFC Ratio on most AMD CPUs, meaning the memory can operate at the same frequency as the CPU memory controller, offering better gaming performance on Ryzen 7000 CPUs.

  • For more DDR5 options you can check out: Best DDR5 Kits for AMD Ryzen 7000 & Ryzen 9000 AM5 CPUs.
  • 2x16GB (32GB) is already overkill for gaming, if your main use case don’t require an obscene amount of memory, a 2x16GB kit would be the recommendation.
  • If you do need more memory, single DIMM per channel (two sticks of RAM, 2x24GB, 2x32GB etc) would be highly recommended to ensure better performance and stability.

Our Recommendation: TEAMGROUP T-Create Expert 6000 CL30 & G.Skill Flare X5 6000 CL30, or any 2x16GB 6000 CL30 kit in the $90-120 price range.

Storage

A good PCIe 4.0 SSD is highly recommended, they are really fast, with excellent response times for everyday tasks, At least 1TB of storage is the recommendation for a gaming build, that way it is possible to have a considerable gaming library ready to play, but with the budget, a 2TB SSD would be the best idea.

It is not necessary to buy a high-end DRAM Cache SSD (WD_Black SN850X, Crucial T500 or similar) for a gaming build, modern SSDs, like the Teamgroup MP44, Lexar NM790 etc, have HMB (Host Memory Buffer), meaning a small portion of system memory will be used as cache. That cache will help during heavy write and read usage. But again, with a budget this high, it might be worth spending a few bucks more on a better SSD.

Our Recommendation: Acer Predator GM7000 2TB, WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB or similar PCIe 4.0 SSD with DRAM Cache.

Cases

For a high-end build, a good airflow case is extremely necessary, not only that, but you also need one that fits all the components you choose. A build with a RTX 4090 will require a case that can support the length of the GPU, and you need something that will support the radiator or Air Cooler you choose for the Ryzen 7800X3D. A good mid or full-tower airflow case around $100-150 would be recommended for a build like this.

In order to ensure overall compatibility, all cases listed here are ATX in size, have enough clearance for even the tallest Air Cooler in the list, the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5, at 168mm (with the exception of the NZXT H9 Flow). All are compatible with 360mm AIOs and most have more than 400mm of GPU clearance, more than enough for even the largest RTX 4090 models.

Our Recommendation: Lian Li Lancool 216 (Excellent cooling and value) or NZXT H7 Flow (Space, quality), or similar case in the $100-150 price range.

PSU

The RTX 4090 is a power hungry GPU, the recommended spec is to buy at least a 850W ATX 3.0 & PCIE5 PSU for it. Power supplies like the Thermaltake GF3 850W, MSI MPG A850G PCIE5 Corsair RM850e and others, are great examples of high quality PSUs to pair with this build.

If the plan is to keep upgrading the build with new GPUs and new CPUs, or just to have some headroom for the PSU to always be within the maximum efficiency curve, the recommendation would be to go with a 1000W ATX 3.0 & PCIE5 PSU instead, models like Corsair RM1000X SHIFT (Requires compatible case), Corsair RM1000e, Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 and be quiet! Straight Power 12 1000W are excellent examples of high-end, very high quality PSUs.

Our recommendation: Corsair RM1000e or MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5.

GPU

To finish up the Ryzen 7800X3D build, we need the GeForce RTX 4090. 4K gaming performance at it’s best, a big price and power consumption to match, and to top it off, the size. The RTX 4090 is right now the best gaming GPU on the market. The best ray-tracing performance, support for DLSS 3 and all of Nvidia best technologies for the gamer public. It is a great GPU for both 1440p high refresh and 4K gaming.
