Looking to get a high-end, high quality 850W or 1000W for a GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 4080 SUPER or Radeon RX 7900 XTX build? Tag along for some of the best ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 and ATX 3.1 & PCIe 5.1 PSU options you can get, without breaking the bank!
The power consumption number for the GeForce RTX 4090 is 450W at maximum load (Stock, according to Nvidia), and the recommendation is a 850W PSU. For a gaming build, with CPUs such as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, a 850W PSU is more than enough. But if you are looking to get a PSU for a workstation build, with a more powerful and power hungry CPU, something like a Ryzen 9 7950X and Ryzen 9 9950X or Intel i7-14700K and Intel i9-14900K, it would be highly recommended to get a 1000W PSU instead.
- The 1000W PSU recommendation is also valid if you plan to overclock the components (CPU and/or GPU), or want some headroom for future upgrades.
- For workloads that can fully utilize both GPU and CPU at the same time, especially if overclocked, it is recommended to get a 1200/1300W or better PSU.
The GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER sits at a much more comfortable 320W during maximum load (Stock, according to Nvidia), meaning a 850W PSU would already be overkill if you are looking into a gaming build, and more than enough for a workstation build. It is a similar story with the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, AMD claims around 355W power consumption at max load, so the recommendation is the same 850W.
Although a $300-350 80+ Titanium power supply would be the absolute best option, it is important to note that there are many high-end, high quality, reliable, highly efficient and silent PSUs, that are much more reasonable options, at a much, much lower price range.
If you are looking to power a gaming PC, or want a good, reliable PSU for a workstation without breaking the bank, here are some of the best options available!
Corsair
The Corsair RM850e and Corsair RM1000e are some of the top picks for high-end, not too expensive, high wattage PSUs. Both are mostly silent (Cybenetics A-), highly efficient, with Cybenetics Platinum rating for the 1000W model, and Cybenetics Gold for the 850W model. Both are compact PSUs (140mm), have very competitive pricing, being the most recommended options for a rational high-end build, be it a gaming or a workstation build.
- Two updated options from the RMe series are also available, the Corsair RM850e ATX 3.1, and the Corsair RM1000e ATX 3.1, with both offering native 600W 12V-2×6 power connector and ATX 3.1 compliance.
The updated Corsair RMx ATX 3.1 series sits a tier above the RMe series. Featuring 10 year warranty, higher quality components, ATX 3.1 compliance, native 12V-2×6 GPU cable and compact size (160mm). The RM1000x ATX 3.1 is rated Cybenetics Platinum for efficiency, and the 850W version is rated Cybenetics Gold. Both are rated Cybenetics A for noise levels and come with a low noise 140mm fan with zero RPM mode.
- The Corsair RMx SHIFT PSUs is another excellent option, especially those looking into a white build. But it requires some extra research to check for case compatibility due to it’s connector layout. Most Corsair ATX Cases are compatible.
The Corsair HX1000i is a must have for those who value efficiency above all else. Flaunting 80 PLUS® Platinum and Cybenetics Platinum scores for efficiency, Cybenetics A for noise levels, ATX 3.1 compliance and of course, a higher price tag. It is an excellent option for those who value those qualities, but it is a bit overkill and unnecessary for most users. It is also has a length of 180mm, requiring a big enough case to fit it’s large size.
